Kalpna is the Author of ‘Spice Yourself Slim,’ harnessing the power of spices to cook healthy, flavourful food.
For over 20 years, Kalpna worked in television production for the BBC, rising to Head of Production overseeing many of the BBC’s food series like Nigel Slater’s Simple Suppers, Food and Drink and Nigellissima, as well as managing the BBC’s landmark natural history and factual series such as Frozen Planet, Antiques Roadshow and Countryfile. Alongside her food writing, Kalpna has launched food festivals, judged food awards and curates the rich food stories and recipes of the 91 language communities of Bristol.
She is Chair of Trustees for Frank Water (a wonderful charity which saves lives by providing clean water solutions in India), a Visiting Professor at the University of West of England, Board Member of the Local Enterprise Partnership in Bristol and a trustee for Knowle West Media Centre (helping under-privileged youngsters to get experience to start media careers). When not working, writing, cooking or looking after her family, she loves to relax by running and keeping herself fit. After managing to complete a half Marathon, running a full one is firmly in her sights!
Congratulations to Kalpna as she and her 91 Ways recently won the ‘Inspiration Award’ at ‘The Guild of Food Writers Awards.’ It celebrates an individual or group whose work in food is inspiring to the writing community, and is voted for by all the members of the Guild. Kalpna harnesses the power of food to bring cultures and communities together in her native Bristol, a city of 91 languages. Her charity’s series of supper clubs, events and a roving Peace Cafe help people to share their values, heritage and stories.
